New York in Rain - watercolor

In my attempt to depart from total realism and freeing myself to have fun and enjoy the process I picked this rainy day photo. I loved the reflections and blurry background. I could have pushed the color more, next time. It was fun to paint.

Travel Sketches of Praha - ink and watercolor

I went to a travel sketching presentation in University Art given by Robert Dvorak. It was very inspiring. So I tried a few of my sketches. These were done form a photographs, I have to yet try it in real world. It was so much fun I might do some more. One thing I am struggling with is composition. I might focus on that a little more. I really like the joy of the pure fun of painting. I find myself obsessing too much about the final outcome.

Washington - oil

After my Tuscany Hills I choose one of Phil's pictures from his summer trip last year. He went to Washington state to hang out with his friend and took quite a few pictures. I liked this one and I am still working on the painting, so this is just work in progress. I am planning on finishing it this week.

I had a great time painting the sky, I was thinking I should just paint skies, it is so much fun.

Autumn Trees - watercolor

I started this painting while back and got stuck on the trees. I felt the leaves were not radiant enough, so I was disappointed and let the painting sit for a while, but than I had painting get-together with friends and I decided to finish it. When I added the trunks of trees, suddenly the leaves became radiant and shined. I learned again something :)

Santorini - watercolor

This a little watercolor I tried to paint with watercolor graphite. It has interesting qualities. Santorini is a great subject, but it is hard to capture the whites and color. I feel I overworked it. But here it is.

Tuscany Hills - oil

I spent quite some time on this painting. I enjoyed the play of colors.

I was getting tired of flowers, so I painted one still life.

Photo from the Art Show

My dear friends artists! This is a photo from my first Art Show in Portola Valley.

My First Art Show

Yesterday was a big day for my painting career. Together with two of my friends, we had a show in a local frame shop. I think it went wonderfully. We had a great attendance and it was a lively party.
I realize I should have posted the invitation much earlier on my blog. It never occurred to me. Well it was a learning experience, so there is obviously more to learn.

This was the invitation, next time it will be up before the show. What a concept!

Quick studies model - oil

This is my second class of figure painting. Talk about challenge, landscape is much more forgiving.

Pottery with Cup - oil

Last class of the winter session. It is time to evaluate. I feel that I learned a lot. I need to practice as much as possible  I am looking for space to paint. There is several options, either join art co-op, which would probably make most sense, or put a shed in the backyard and paint there. Issues with the shed are electricity, plumbing and being isolated from other artists. Part of the joy of painting comes from belonging to the wonderful community of likeminded people.

Here is my still life.

Woman with red ball - oil

Next section of Ray's class is quick studies of a figure. After landscape, which is rather forgiving, since the mountain can have any shape you want, painting human body is challenge, since the expectation is for the picture to look like a person. We did two paintings in the class and the first one came out better than the second. We had 50 min to paint this!

I am getting ready for my first art show with my two wonderful friends and fellows artists Marianne and Caroline. We will be showing our paintings in Portola Valley frame shop Allegro. I am looking forward to it.

The vase was very interesting to paint and I always love fruit. Somehow the vase ended up just looking stiff. I can see now that I needed to add more reflections and interest to the white areas. I have to also pay more attention to highlights. The painting looks dead without highlights.
Another day, another painting :)

Lavender Fields - Oil

I loved this photo, but painting it in oil turned out to be much harder than I expected. The hill just doesn't look right. On the other hand the middle ground I thought came out well, even the tree has depth and I like it. But then there is the lavender! It just doesn't like me and the feelings from my side are the same. I just couldn't get it so I was reworking it and reworking it, but it is still not right. Oh well, one of those days :)

Brass Vase with Pears - oil

I feel that fruit might become my favorite subject. It doesn't move and has beautiful colors and totally unpredictable shapes. Another favorite of mine are metal objects. I feel that they are total challenge, but the rewards, if executed well, are enormous. There is so much to learn. Some days it seems that I am finally getting it and than next time it is totally frustrating. I am sure this is called creative process :)

Windy Hill From Foothill Park - oil

This painting was fun to paint. I enjoyed the colors and dynamics of the clouds. Reflections are a lot of fun too. Not easy, but fun. I finished this in the class. I am not the fastest painter, so it is a record for me.

Oriental Vase and Pear - oil

White is always interesting. I did picture with white candle stick and cup in pastel and it was a learning experience. This painting was fun I enjoyed the metal surface of the short container and getting the white vase look white and not dirty. The background makes it all come together.

Coastal Landscape - oil

Why do i always pick tough subjects? I like challenge and here it is. I never painted ocean with waves and cliffs. I love the the coast and the ocean. So it just makes sense that I should learn to paint it. Just give me a few years :) I didn't finish this one either, but I will.

Vase, Platter with Lemon and Urn - oil

Challenge. Blue vase didin't quite come together. There was light coming from all directions, so the shadows didn't quite make sense and I didn't fix them.

Spring Landscape before Storm - Oil

First landscape. I really enjoyed painting it, but didn't finish. I need to work on speeding up. But I feel that if I rush I do not pay the attention the subject deserves. So there you go. I have a good excuse.

I might come back to it. I think it has some good dynamics. It would be fun to pull together. And I did work on it at home. The difference is pretty incredible. I am glad I worked on it some more. Top pictuer is the finished painting

I liked reference photo for this painting for the drama in the sky and for the beautiful yellow flowers in the foreground. It has the drama of the storm coming, the light and dark and fun colors. I didn't finish it in the class, but because I really liked it finalized it at home. I am trying to figure where to paint out of the class.

Blue Vase with Lemons

Lemons are fun to paint. I need to get another lemon tree, my old one died :( Fruit in general is interesting to paint.

Vase with citrus fruit - oil

Slowly learning, but feel much better about it. Have to admit that in the class I feel pretty inferior. Most of the people are really good. But I love the challenge. I should paint smaller, it takes lass time.

Pottery with Pomegranate - oil

Some days I feel more optimistic about painting that others. I enjoyed this setup.

Blue Vine Bottle - oil

I liked this one. It is my favorite so far from Rays class.

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Pottery and Oranges - oil

I feel that I am making baby steps to getting this oil painting down. It is still struggle and I feel that I do not have enough time to rally get into it. I am starting to talk to friend of mine Sondra about maybe getting a tiny place, where we could paint. It is really my New Years resolution. I find it very hard to paint at home. There is always something to clean, sort, go through and I feel guilty to paint :(

By the way, Laura really liked this painting so I gave it to her. I hope you like it, my dear friend.

Bowl with Citrus - oil

I love to paint lemons. I am guessing it might be because they are yellow, which is my favorite color. The combination of the blue and yellow is just wonderful.

Black Vase - oil

Still struggling with the paint. I think I am putting too much pint on and than I can't control it.

Quick studies with Ray - oil

The other oil class I am taking is with Ray Mendieta. Ray is classically trained and gives us solid basis for painting. There is a lot of people I know in the class. It is fun to see everyone. Class is very hard. We paint two paintings a class each 40 minutes. there is no time for fooling around. I have a disadvantage, I am pretty slow.

Pears and Clay Pot

New Year is here and new classes. I am taking two oil classes. It will be a challenge to adjust to two different teaching styles, but I look at it as an advantage. I will not get stuck with one way to paint. I will have a chance to pick what fits for me.
Here is first painting from Jim's class
